You Can Never Go Back, But Neither Can You Leave—Part 5

Emory hadn’t talked much with Johny in the last six months. The last time they’d seen each other had gone about as badly as it could have, with Emory telling her that she didn’t want to see her face ever again. It was embarrassing for her to recollect, but Johny was being sweet about it.

“You’re a passionate bitch,” Johny said through the phone. “It’s part of what I love about you.”

“I know,” Emory said into the phone. “But I don’t like yelling.”

“You think you were yelling?”

“Well, yeah …”

“Babe, that is not yelling. If you think that’s yelling, you ain’t seen nothin’. I grew up with a drunk father. That was some yelling, yo.”

Emory smiled sadly. “I’ll bet.”

“You are sweet and mild, baby.”

“Really?”

“Oh yeah,” Johny said softly. “So sweet.”

Emory thought she heard a tiny gasp.

“Are you …”

“Mm hmm,” Johny said. “Totally I am. You should join me.”

“Like, come over?”

“No, like, right now. On the phone.”

“Oh.”

“Have you ever?”

“I mean … I guess not?” Emory thought back about it, back to before her transition. “No, I guess not.”

“Well you should try it. It’s amazing.”

“Like, just … start?”

“Totally. That’s what I did.”
