On a Precipice of Dream’s Edge
We stand on the precipice, you and I, of dream’s edge.
If you’re inclined to to look down, you first see a cosmos, similar to what you may have seen through that fancy new telescope.
Assuming that doesn’t scare you off or lure you in, next forms an image of a black iron sphere with a funnel running to it.
That is what we are looking for, I whisper in your ear.
I’m not right up on you. My thoughts just travel softly to you as though I were. Unless, of course, you want me to be right up on you, in which case I am, lickety-split.
You may already know how, but if you don’t, it’s perfectly fine and reasonable to ask how we’re going to get there, maybe why we want to go there.
You can follow me or take my hand. If you can travel alone and you want that, then I'll see you there. But if you stay with me, my touch isn’t light or heavy but complete, like a melding of our bodies, and we effortlessly go there, together.
Play procedures
- What do you know about or think of Philip K. Dick’s concept of the Black Iron Prison? If you’re writing along, journal about it or write an essay.
- If you’re doing Dungeon23 or maybe have been mulling it over, make your megadungeon based upon the idea that somehow you can access the interplanar infrastructure of the prison. Take a stab at what might happen if the PCs destroy it.
- If you don’t yet know the secrets of dream walking, extraplanar travel, astral projection, or telepathy, you may count this chapter toward all four (as opposed to the typical one of any). If you are working with Alithea, Desi, the Heirlooms, or the Snakes, this is considered a major inroad into my (Teresa’s) mind. Write it on your sheet, or it doesn’t count.
