Coming Soon: Ten Years Gone

In November, 2023, my first (completed) novel, Everything Fails, will be ten years old.

Most writers hide their mistakes—or want to, anyway. Or, shit, I dunno. Maybe the writer doesn’t care, and it’s the publisher. Whatever. The thing is, you’re not gonna see most of the mistakes. You’re going to see a ‘finished work,’ a ‘product,’ and your mind is meant to react as though this thing popped into existence like Athena from Zeus’ head or some such shit.

So what I want to do over the next little while is walk you through the embarrassing bits of my first draft of my first book. As we go, I’ll explain why I made the changes I did. You can decided if the Final Cut is better or if you prefer the First Cut. Until now, only a handful of folks have read both, so. Lucky you.

Next ish we’ll go over the history of the book and how I came to write it. At least a few of you have heard that story a bunch, so if that means you, feel free to skip it.

Then, we’ll get into my four major attempts to revise it or otherwise improve upon it, including a partial redraft in 2015.

I’ll also touch on some architectural points that I built in from the beginning and show how and when I paid those off in subsequent books. You can decide if it works or of it’s another failure. Either way, it’s okay, because in the end, everything fails.

Oh, and it you wanna do T a solid and buy the fucker, it is on Amazon (link in my Substack profile) and Barnes & Noble. You can ask your local B&N and/or library to order you a copy, too, if that’s more your speed.

Till next time, mah lovelies.

Xoxo,

T
