Folks keep secrets for lots of reasons. The way I’ve tried to help my kids understand the distinction between secrecy and privacy is that privacy is about protecting someone from discomfort or pain of embarrassment, whereas secrecy is about perpetuating harm or bad behavior without being caught or stopped.
